TACHS

The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) is the admissions exam used by Catholic high schools across the New York City area. Students typically take the TACHS in the fall of grade 8 as part of their high school applications.

What is the TACHS?

The TACHS is the standard admissions test for Catholic high schools in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the surrounding area. It measures the reading, writing, and math skills students have built through middle school, along with general reasoning ability.

Exam format

The TACHS is given in a single timed sitting and is divided into four sections: reading, written expression, mathematics, and ability. Each section is timed separately, so pacing is a key part of preparation.

What’s covered

  • Reading: comprehension of literary and informational passages
  • Written expression: grammar, usage, and writing mechanics
  • Mathematics: arithmetic through introductory algebra, plus word problems
  • Ability: verbal and quantitative reasoning
